Origin:


Collected by Professor G.C. Nel in 1936 (?), and named for M. Otzen who invited Nel to go on the joint collecting trip in the course of which he discovered the plants.

Distribution:


RSA: CP, in a small area to the N and NW of Loeriesfontein. TL 'Bushmanland: Brakfontein, 30 miles from Loeriesfontein, in decomposed granite, under shrubs and in open places among stones' (C128).
Stone: Gneiss. Colours grey-white, grey, light brown, greenish grey-white.

Description:


Very distinctive because of the scalloped margins and round islands.
Profile cordate-truncate; top surface convex; fissure fairly deep, 8-13 mm; lobes usually slightly divergent.
Face flush to slightly elevated; mostly ± elliptic; lobes equal-unequal; opaque + transluscent; smooth to slightly rugose.
Margins usually very distinct, occasionally ± even or slightly dentate, typically scalloped with rounded peninsulas.
Windows usually ± occluded, mostly with a fairly large open area in the middle, but sometimes reduced to narrow channels; infrequently ± completely open.
Channels broad to narrow, irregular.
Islands few to many, usually fairly large, regular, rounded, and mostly situated together with the peninsulas along the outer and inner margins.
Rubrications absent.
Dusky dots not visible.
Colours: Margins and islands various shades of opaque light grey, usually tinged with pale pink, cream, green or blue. Windows and channels various shades of transluscent bluish or greyish green, or greenish, bluish or pinkish grey, occasionally with a reddish tint lighting up the inner edges of the margins. Shoulders as for the margins, or a little lighter.
Size: Small to medium, facial diameters up to 30 X 20 mm, mostly about 25 X 18 mm. Number of heads up to 23 or more, mostly 2-5.

Flowers:


Yellow with white centres, small to medium, up to 35 mm Ø, mostly 20-30 mm Ø.
Seed capsules mostly 5-merous (94%), otherwise 4-merous (4%), or 6-merous (2%). Profile boat-shaped, top flat. Face broadly elliptic to elliptic, up to 8,5 X 6,5 mm, mostly about 7,5 X 6 mm.
Seeds yellow-brown; tuberculate 1, flecked.

Collected by D.T. & N.A. Cole on 2 November 1968.

Distribution:


Known only from one colony, C128, NW of Loeriesfontein, where only one specimen was found.

Description:


Distinctive in colour, but in all other respects the same as the type.
Colours: Margins & islands opaque dull bluish grey-green. Windows transluscent dark greyish green. Dusky dots not visible. Shoulders as for the margins.
